Veronica Dragalin, Head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office: “Citizens who have information about the corruption of prosecutors should come and denounce them”

Head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA) Veronica Dragalin has called on Moldovan citizens who have information about corruption acts involving anti-corruption prosecutors to denounce them. The statement was made on Jurnal TV’s “Secrets of Power” programme on Wednesday 18 January.

On corruption in the Prosecutor’s Office, the PA chief said she had heard “rumours and assumptions” that “prosecutors who worked during previous governments are corrupt”. In this context, Dragalin noted that “it is not right to talk in such a way about all people in an institution”.

Veronica Dragalin said she wanted to be presented with “concrete” facts and appealed to Moldovan citizens who have “information that people in the PA have asked for money for files or have made files to order” to denounce them, saying she would find time to receive them in an audience. She noted that the person who makes such a self-report, under Moldovan law, is released from all liability.

Dragalin: “I’m not resigning”

On the leaks in Telegram, according to which the competition for the PA leadership was rigged, and on the opposition’s request to resign as a matter of honour, Dragalin said that “I took part in a competition where I had to submit information about myself and a broad management plan about my intentions. It was a committee of five people, three of them from outside the country. I won the highest score. All candidates participated in a public interview. Everyone can see my interview and the interviews of the other candidates. I don’t see that it was a rigged competition. I don’t see any reason why I should resign.”

Dragalin also previously stated that “I am in this position to do my job as a prosecutor. The corrupt have already understood this very well and are disturbed, even scared. That’s why they started asking for my resignation. Which is not going to happen. I will continue to work alongside my team in the PA, alongside all those who are honest and dedicated to doing our job in the service of the law, the citizens, and the country.”
