Fourteen raids were carried out on Friday, July 21, by officers of the National Anti-Corruption Centre (NAC) and anti-corruption prosecutors at the ÎMSP “Oncological Institute” in a file of passive and active bribery in which several senior doctors of the institution are under investigation.

According to the NAC, the individuals are suspected of demanding and accepting illicit remuneration from patients for providing free medical services.

“The criminal case was initiated in April 2023, and so far the illicit actions of the deputy director of the Diagnostic Consultative Centre and three heads of departments have been documented. According to the evidence gathered, the said persons allegedly demanded and accepted, personally and through third parties, various amounts of money from patients for the following services: for the organisation of the performance of surgical operations, consultation of patients without a row, as well as the organisation of the provision of other medical services, the performance of which is provided for in the job descriptions of the medical staff and which are covered by the medical insurance policy, to be provided to the beneficiaries free of charge. Thus, the amounts claimed and accepted by the persons under investigation were not reflected in the institution’s accounts,” a NAC statement said.

Following searches of the suspects’ homes, offices and cars, according to the NAC, money in lei and various currencies and records of persons who received specialized outpatient medical care were seized.

At present, the criminal prosecution continues and the four employees of the IMSP “Oncological Institute” are being investigated in custody.

Investigations on this case are continuing and the prosecution is being conducted by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
