President Sandu Addresses the Constitutional Court to Dissolve the Parliament

President Sandu addressed today the Constitutional Court to dissolve the Parliament and start early parliamentary elections. This happens after the president had consultations with the Socialist Party and Shor Party. Sandu said that the parties “reiterated their position regarding the formation of a Government with full attributions and rights, supported by a formalized parliamentary majority.

The Socialist Party, Shor Party, and the For Moldova and Pro Moldova factions signed a declaration that states their opposition to the dissolution of the Parliament, motivating that they formed a parliamentary majority that could vote a government with the Moldovan Ambassador to Russia, Golovatiuc, as prime minister. The leader of the Socialist Party, Igor Dodon said that the country needs now an anti-crisis government that would solve the problems caused by the pandemic.

“While the country urgently needs a life-saving vaccine and the investment of an anti-crisis government, the head of state calls for early elections.”

Dodon said that the Socialist Party will use all the constitutional, legal and political means to prevent early parliamentary elections in the midst of a pandemic.

”The Socialists will submit to the Constitutional Court all the arguments for approving a decision that will not be contrary to the constitutional norm and the recommendations of the Venice Commission in recent years. At the same time, we declare that the Socialists will use all constitutional, legal and political means not to allow early parliamentary elections in the midst of a pandemic, to protect citizens and provide them with at least 1 million vaccines,” said Dodon in a post on Facebook.

On Tuesday, the leader of the Socialist faction, Corneliu Furculiță, addressed the Constitutional Court assessing that there are no circumstances for the Parliament’s dissolution because there is now a majority in the parliament and a candidate for prime minister.
