A Year Passed Since Ilan Shor Fled Moldova. The Latest Developments in the Case of Illegal Border Crossing.

Last summer, the Prosecutor’s Office informed that it had started a criminal case on the illegal crossing of the state border by the controversial businessman and deputy Ilan Shor. The state prosecutors mentioned at the time that Shor’s escape would have been possible due to the negligence of the Border Police and Customs Service. Soon it will be a year since the case was launched, but the Prosecutor’s Office informed ZdG that the case is still in the criminal investigation phase.

The leader of the Shor Party, Moldovan businessman Ilan Shor has not appeared in public since the Democratic Party withdrew into opposition on June 14, 2019. According to a statement from the General Prosecutor’s Office, Shor left the country between 14 and 17 June. He managed to avoid border controls and left through Chişinău International Airport.

Although soon there will be a year since the investigation into the Border Police and Custom Police negligence was launched, the representatives of the Office of the Prosecutor General told ZdG that the investigation is ongoing.

“A series of criminal prosecutions were carried out, heard over a hundred people, including civil servants. Requests were also addressed by rogatory commissions to the Romanian and Ukrainian authorities. Depending on their results, it will be decided accordingly,” prosecutor Maria Vieru mentioned for ZdG.

Ilan Șor appeared in the public space for the last time on June 12, during a press conference, two days before the Democratic Party returned in opposition.

The state prosecutors stated that this took place through the limited access areas of the Airport and was possible due to the negligent attitude towards the service obligations of the employees of the Customs Service and the General Inspectorate of the Border Police, which operate on the territory of the Airport. and with the direct involvement of the employees of the Avia Invest company, which owns the Airport in concession and provides the transport and air traffic services, carries out aviation security measures on the territory of the aerodrome from where the respective aircraft took off on charter flights.

For illegally crossing the state border, the deputy could be punished with a fine, 200 hours of unpaid community service or imprisonment for up to two years.

Detained in May 2015, Ilan Şor was sentenced in 2017 to seven years and six months in prison for fraud and money laundering, but the court ordered that the sentence come into force only after it becomes final.
