The seven Turkish citizens from the “Orizont” high school network, detained and illegally expelled from Moldova in 2018, have obtained the right to enter and stay in the territory of Moldova. The Migration and Asylum Office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) has reviewed the administrative acts issued in respect of Turkish citizens, following an ECtHR ruling of 11 June 2019.
The Turkish citizens’ requests for asylum were previously denied on the grounds that they were a ‘threat to national security’, with the plane that took them to Turkey being paid for by the Moldovan Intelligence and Security Service (SIS). For the illegal expulsion of the teachers, former SIS director Vasile Botnari was sentenced to a suspended sentence in September 2020 and fined 88 thousand lei (just under 4500 Euro)
