Two Deputies Detained in the Billion-Dollar Bank Fraud
The Shor Party deputies Denis Ulanov and Petru Jardan were detained yesterday after the Parliament voted to lift their immunity. Ulanov is accused of provoking damages to the state amounting to 12.5 million US dollars and 24 million euros and Petru Jardan is accused to have damaged the state enterprise Chișinău International Airport with 250,000 euros.
Yesterday, the Parliament lifted Ulanov and Jardan’s parliamentary immunities. According to the prosecutor general, Ulanov allegedly provoked damages to the state amounting to 12.5 million US dollars and 24 million euros and Petru Jardan damaged the state enterprise Chișinău International Airport with 250,000 euros. Jardan has been immediately detained for 72 hours and escorted to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office. Deputy Ulanov was subsequently detained for 72 hours too.
The Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo requested the Parliament to lift the immunity of the Shor Party deputies Petru Jardan and Denis Ulanov. Prosecutors investigate the two deputies in the billion-dollar bank fraud for abuse of power and money laundering. The Prosecutor’s Office announced that they have gathered conclusive evidence of Ulanov’s involvement in the billion-dollar bank fraud and money laundering. The other deputy, Petru Jardan allegedly committed abuse of office in the interest of an organized criminal group, damaging the state enterprise Chișinău International Airport.
Denis Ulanov is one of Ilan Shor’s lawyers in the billion-dollar bank fraud case. The deputy stated that he would vote to lift his own immunity and asked his party colleagues to do the same, motivating he has nothing to hide. The accused deputy Petru Jardan held several significant positions in businesses affiliated with the controversial businessman Ilan Shor. Since 2013, he has been the director of the Avia Invest company, which manages the Chișinău International Airport following a public-private partnership contract wrapped up in suspect circumstances.
