“I had a meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, whom I thanked for the support offered over the years in various fields, support that brought our country closer to the European family and which have benefited our citizens. We emphasized that European integration is not an abstract term for us. It is a work plan to build a state with functional, strong institutions and to improve the situation in the country through concrete cooperation projects. We discussed the importance of faster access to anti-Covid-19 vaccines for our citizens and the need to provide the health system with protective equipment, the importance of financial assistance for our country in the coming years, and the Eastern Partnership for bringing us closer to European values and standards.
Ms. Ursula von der Leyen assured us that we can continue to rely on all the EU’s support both for vaccinating our citizens and for continuing financial assistance to implement the planned reforms.
We talked about the serious situation of our farmers and small and medium enterprises due to the pandemic and drought and about the way they can be helped to overcome the crisis. I stressed that the citizens of Moldova have given me a strong anti-corruption mandate and that my election as President is a first step towards consolidating a truly European democracy in Moldova.
After the early parliamentary elections and the creation of a functioning government, it will be possible to implement the reforms we have planned. The citizens of Moldova have been convinced for many years that the European Union has always been with us, both in good times and in worse times. Cooperation with the EU has brought and continues to bring concrete benefits to our citizens. The Free Trade Area with the EU has allowed increased trade, job creation at home in our country, and increased the resistance of Moldova to economic shocks both internally and externally. Cooperation with the EU is essential for our country, both in terms of strengthening institutions and in mitigating the effects of the economic crisis”, says Maia Sandu’s message.
European Commission President assures Maia Sandu of EU support for its reform agenda on the fight against corruption, the rule of law, and the fight against COVID-19 in Moldova.
