Russia Sentences a Moldovan Citizen to 15 Years in Prison for Espionage
The Moscow court found the former member of the board of directors of the energy company Inter RAO, Karina Turcan, guilty of espionage against Russia.
On Tuesday, December 29, Karina Țurcan, a Moldovan citizen, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, in a closed regime, RIA Novosti reports. At the same time, 656 million Russian rubles (around 7.3 million euros) withdrawn from Țurcan were transformed into state revenues. A panel of three judges examined the case behind closed doors because the materials were labeled secret. The state prosecution of the Russian Federation requested 18 years in prison.
Karina Țurcan was arrested in June 2018, being accused by the security forces of the Russian Federation of espionage. In an interview, Karina Țurcan stated that the accusations of espionage brought against her are based on a copy of the investigation of a Moldovan agent whose data coincide with her own.
