Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat Re-elected as the President of the party he founded, the Liberal Democratic Party
On August 16, the IX Extraordinary Congress of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova took place. From the announcement made by the vice-president of the Liberal Democratic Party, the founder of the party, Vlad Filat, was re-elected as president of the Liberal Democratic Party.
Alexandru Bujorean, the vice-president of the Liberal Democratic Party, made public the announcement about the re-election of Vlad Filat as president of the Liberal Democratic Party on Facebook.
In a press release issued by the Liberal Democratic Party, it is shown that Filat returns to politics. The IX Extraordinary Congress of the Liberal Democratic Party empowered him to take over the leadership of the party.
The proceedings of the Congress, which took place online, were attended by 215 delegates out of a total of 239, appointed by the conferences of the territorial organizations of the Liberal Democratic Party from 26 administrative-territorial units of the second level.
In his speech, the Liberal Democratic Party President Tudor Deliu spoke about the political context in which the party has carried out its activity in recent years and thanked his colleagues for the trust they placed in him when they elected him as the President of the Liberal Democratic Party.
“I am grateful for the fact that two years ago you entrusted me to exercise the position of president of the Liberal Democratic Party. For me, it was an honor, but also a great responsibility. In the conditions in which we worked, our minimum goal was to keep the flame burning, to keep people close, to give them the certainty that everything will be fine, that the Liberal Democratic Party deserves to become and will become what it was – the locomotive of the European Integration,” said Tudor Deliu.
Among the party’s achievements during his term, Deliu highlighted the increase in the number of territorial organizations from nine to 26 and the good performance of the party in the local elections in autumn 2019.
“To the surprise of our unfriends who kept us in check and contrary to all the polls in which the Liberal Democratic Party did not even appear as a political entity, in the last local elections we obtained a good result. As a political rating at the national level, we managed to obtain almost 6 percent, the Liberal Democratic Party becoming the fourth political force in Moldova,” Deliu mentioned.
At the proposal of several delegates, also supported by Deliu, the founder and first president of the party, Vlad Filat, was proposed and voted for the position of President of the Liberal Democratic Party, with 214 votes out of 215.
In his message to Congress, Filat thanked the delegates for the trust given to all party members for the courage, patience, and consistency they have shown over the past five years.
“I apologize that in the previous mandates we did not do everything to protect the party, to protect our members. But I learned my lesson. The time has come when we and our deeds must speak of ourselves. We wanted this decision to return to the Liberal Democratic Party leadership to belong to the party, to all our colleagues. I return not to a position, but to an enormous responsibility. Mr. Deliu, thank you for everything, thank you for saving the party! ” said Vlad Filat.
In the end, delegates adopted a resolution stating that the Liberal Democratic Party would run in the November 1 presidential election and the upcoming parliamentary elections. Also, the Liberal Democrats expressed their determination to relaunch the Country Project they started years ago – the integration of Moldova into the European Union.
