May 9 marks the historic day on which the Schuman Declaration was signed. In a speech in Paris in 1950, the then French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, proposed the establishment of a new form of political cooperation in Europe that would forever rule out the possibility of a new war between the nations of Europe.
His vision was to create a European institution that would centralize and manage coal and steel production. A year later, the treaty was signed which provided for the creation of such an organization. Robert Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the cornerstone of the European Union.
