A tanker under Moldova’s flag got stranded on Odessa Dolphin beach, provoking a pollution level that exceeds the norm by 53 times. Ukraine’s inspectors will assess the situation and initiate a claim for damages.
On the night of November 22, the Delphi tanker’s anchor broke loose due to strong wind and the tanker was carried off towards the Odessa Dolphin beach. Initially, the tanker was located in the Pivdennyi port, 30 km from Odessa.
The crew refused to leave the ship, but in the end, they were evacuated, and the ship ran aground and almost turned over.
According to hromadske, near Odessa, at the accident site of the Delphi tanker, the detected pollution level exceeded the norm by 53 times. Announced by the acting head of the State Environmental Inspectorate Egor Firsov.
Firsov also said that the state inspectors monitor the pollution site. He added that the inspectors will assess the damage to the environment, and initiate a claim for damages.
According to tsn.ua the tanker worked on the high seas as an illegal gas station.
The environmental inspectors of the Crimean-Black Sea region carried out the verification of the samples from the accident site.
The Delphi tanker has been anchored since May 2019 under Moldova’s flag. The owner of the tanker is a citizen of the United Kingdom, the port of register is in Romania, and the tanker left Constanța port.
