After a working visit to Kyiv, Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, is making a working visit to Moscow, on September 11.

According to a press release issued by the ministry, Popescu will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and other Russian officials from the State Duma and the Federation Council, representatives of the Moldovan diaspora and civil society.

During the visit, Popescu will discuss ways of normalizing the bilateral relations, of restoring the political dialogue and the commercial-economic cooperation” , says the Ministry.

At the same time, Nicu Popescu would reiterate in Moscow the need for an unconditional and complete withdrawal of the Russian military and ammunition from the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

On September 4, Maria Zakharova, the Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced Popescu’s visit to Moscow, as well as his planned meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to the Russian state-operated news agency RIA Novosti, Zakharova said during a press briefing that the parties will discuss issues related to cooperation between the two countries and international issues, which are of mutual interest.

In an interview on July 30, Prime Minister Sandu told the Russian News Agency TASS that she was planning to accept the invitation of her Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, to visit Moscow in September. At the time, she also said that the Moldovan Foreign Minister, Nicu Popescu, was set to visit Moscow earlier that month, ahead of her trip.
