Moldova’s Next Ambassador to Turkey Could Be a Former Bashkan of UTA Gagauzia
Moldova’s next ambassador to Turkey could be a former Bashkan of the Autonomous Territorial Unit (UTA) of Găgăuzia, said President Igor Dodon at the swearing in ceremony of the current Governor, Irina Vlah.
The newly appointed Governor – known as the Bashkan of Găgăuzia – took the oath as a member of Government on August 14.
“I believe that we [all nationalities] should live in peace. You know my position. I decided to propose people from different nationalities to other positions as well. Recently, together with the prime minister, we decided to submit a former UTA Găgăuz Bashkan for the position of ambassador to Turkey, which will contribute to the development of normal relations between different nationalities in the Republic of Moldova,” the Head of State said.
The head of the Presidential press service, Carmena Sterpu, refused to tell ZdG who the new Ambassador to Turkey might be.
“The name of the Ambassador of Moldova to Turkey will be disclosed when the final decision is made,” she commented.
Previously, parliamentary Deputy for the Solidarity and Action Party Octavian Țîcu told RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service that currently the ACUM Bloc and the Socialist Party are sharing positions, ministries, competitions, parliamentary committees and even ambassadors – something that both the ACUM Bloc and the Socialist Party refuted before.
Later, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, added that, “The main criterion in the election and appointment of the ambassadors of our country is their ability to contribute to an active foreign policy and for the benefit of the citizens, their political preferences or favouritism being not a subject of discussion.”
