The selection and evaluation criteria for candidates for magistrates will be revised. Parliament approves amendments to the regulatory framework for assessing judges’ performance
Parliament voted on Friday 24 November, in second reading, amendments to the regulatory framework related to the Law on the selection and evaluation of the performance of judges.
The authors of the draft law propose amendments to the Law on the Organisation of the Judiciary, the Law on the Status of Judges, the Law on the Superior Council of Magistracy, the Law on the National Institute of Justice and the Law on the Disciplinary Liability of Judges.
According to a Parliament press release, the proposed amendments will bring the regulatory framework in line with the provisions of the Law on the Selection and Performance Evaluation of Judges, adopted by Parliament in June this year.
The Law on the Selection and Evaluation of the Performance of Judges provides for the merger of the College for the Selection and Career of Judges and the College for the Evaluation of the Performance of Judges. At the same time, the selection and evaluation criteria have been revised in order to “ensure an objective and fair assessment of candidates for judgeships or judges in office”.
The bill was approved at second reading by 62 MEPs.
