CEC chairwoman on late publication of preliminary election results: ‘There were cyber security incidents’
On the day of the general local elections, but especially after the closing of polling stations, cyber security incidents and several attempts to disable the information technology infrastructure of the Central Election Commission (CEC) were recorded, CEC Chairwoman Angelica Caraman announced on Monday, November 6.
Caraman came with the clarification after several comments appeared in the public space about the impossibility of accessing the CEC’s website, as well as extended periods in which information on results was not updated.
“These caused that for short periods of time, at the stage of displaying the preliminary results, the external updating of information on certain applications was slowed down. Specialists from the Information Technology and Cyber Security Service reacted promptly and, to all those threats and deviations they identified, managed to block these attacks and further secure the IT system, presenting the election results in a transparent and protected form,” said the CEC Chairperson.
In 623 out of 898 localities, mayors were elected in the first round of the general local elections.
