“Moldova is not alone”. UK Prime Minister announces new support for Moldova
Britain will give new support to Moldova to help it cope with Russian pressure. The announcement was made on June 1 by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after the European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Bulboaca, Anenii Noi.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a Twitter post that “Moldova is not alone” and that his country would help it to cope with Russian pressure. Sunak did not specify what the “new support” announced at the EPC summit would entail, but according to a UK government statement, the prime minister was due to announce £10.5 million in financial support for managing Moldova’s refugee crisis.
“As the first British Prime Minister to visit Moldova, I am pleased to announce further support to help the country in the face of Russian aggression. Moldova is not alone,” UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote on Twitter.
In March 2023, the UK announced a new financial support package worth £10 million for Moldova’s economic development and energy sector.
The UK government announced on 9 December 2022 a sanctions list targeting 30 corrupt political figures and human rights violators around the world. The list includes the leader of the Shor Party, fugitive MP Ilan Shor, who was sentenced in 2017 to seven years and six months in prison for fraud and money laundering and placed under international wanted list, and the former leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), Vlad Plahontiuc, who was placed under international wanted list and previously sanctioned by the US for corruption. Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor are under investigation in the “bank fraud” case.
