Anatolie Gîrbu, one of the prosecutors who led the prosecution of the rape case against former border policeman Gheorghe Petic, has won the competition for the position of deputy chief prosecutor of the Ungheni District Prosecutor’s Office. The decision was approved by the members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) at their meeting on 10 April 2023.

Thus, the decision of the PSC is to be forwarded to the interim Prosecutor General, Ion Munteanu, to start the procedure for issuing the documents for the appointment of Anatolie Gîrbu as Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Ungheni District Prosecutor’s Office for a five-year term.

Anatolie Gîrbu told the PSC members that in this position he aims to “increase the quality of the criminal trial phases”. The prosecutor says that the distribution of work within the court must be done “on honest principles”, of “equality of work” and that he opts for “specialisation of prosecutors in areas such as trafficking in human beings, combating torture, domestic violence”.

As for the rape case against former border policeman Gheorghe Petic, the prosecutor says that the case “was assigned to him” because he was “a prosecutor on duty” and that he was unable to analyse the information in the case because it was withdrawn a few days after it was assigned to him.

“That criminal case was assigned to me because I was a prosecutor on duty that week. (…) I led the criminal prosecution which was initiated by the prosecuting body. The person was detained by the prosecution, I was not in Ungheni district on that day. (…) I was informed that I was asked to lead the prosecution and that the person was detained only when I was returning from Chisinau. (…) I led the prosecution from Friday evening and on Monday this criminal case was withdrawn from me”, Anatolie Gîrbu said.

Anatolie Gîrbu began his career as a prosecutor in the Ungheni District Prosecutor’s Office in December 2005. In spring 2021, he was appointed interim deputy chief prosecutor of the Calarasi District Prosecutor’s Office, but his appointment order was cancelled in January 2023. In 2022, Anatolie Gîrbu applied for the position of Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of Straseni district, but was rejected by the PSC.

The Gîrbu family owns a house with an area of more than 151 square meters, with a market value of 840 000 lei, and a 52 square meter apartment, bought in 1995. The value of the property is 63 731 lei. The family also owns a Volkswagen Golf V, manufactured in 2008, which they bought in 2015 for 90 500 lei.
