The “moldovan” language replaced by “Romanian”, now also in the Constitution

Changes have been made on the legis.md website, where laws adopted by the legislature and promulgated by the head of state are published. Thus, now the state language of Moldova is officially Romanian, functioning on the basis of Latin spelling.

The change comes after the Parliament voted on 16 March 2023 in the final reading of the draft law which stipulates that the phrase “Romanian language” will replace “moldovan language” in all laws of Moldova, and the phrases “official language”, “state language” and “mother tongue” will be replaced.

The draft law was drafted by a group of MPs from the “Action and Solidarity Party” faction and passed in second reading by 58 votes.
