Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee adopted a declaration calling for “accession negotiations to start as soon as possible”
At the 13th meeting of the Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee, a joint declaration was adopted in support of our country’s European path, which calls, among other things, for the start of negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union as soon as possible, after the nine recommendations of the European Commission (EC) are fulfilled, MEP Siegfried Muresan, chairman of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Moldova, announced on Thursday, March 23.
“Today I co-chaired a very good meeting of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee. Together with Members of the European Parliament and the Moldovan Parliament, representatives of the Moldovan Government, as well as of the European Commission and the European External Action Service, we conveyed our clear support for increased European support to Moldova”, said Siegfried Mureșan in a post on his Facebook page.
The MEP announced some of the provisions of the declaration adopted today at the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee:
- The start of negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union as soon as possible, once the 9 recommendations have been met;
- European sanctions regime for oligarchs who want to destabilise and corrupt Moldova;
- Special unit dedicated to relations with Moldova in the European Commission’s Neighbourhood Directorate
- More resources for the EU Hub for Internal Security and Border Management in Moldova;
- Full liberalisation of EU-Moldova trade;
- Increased European financial support for Moldova;
- Elimination of roaming charges between the EU and Moldova.
- The EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee is the parliamentary forum of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement. It is composed of members appointed by the Moldovan Parliament and the European Parliament and meets twice a year, alternately in Chisinau and Brussels.
The 13th meeting of the Moldova-EU Parliamentary Association Committee took place in Brussels on Thursday 23 March.
On 23 June 2022, the European Council granted Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidate countries for EU membership.
